At one point or another in our lives, we’ve all felt an energetic drain from people or situations. This can cause headaches, exhaustion, anxiety, and more – dealing with these situations is taxing! Luckily, there’s a name for the someones or somethings that take the wind out of our sails in a serious way: They’re called energy vampires. While we might think of vampires as mythical creatures with fangs, what we’re talking about is a little different. Hear us out!
When we are pushed to the mental and emotional limit by others, our bodies get depleted as our auric field is consumed with energy that’s not our own. While we may not notice it at first, our magic, intuition, and work can suffer when people are feeding off our energy – just like vampires. Unlike the Count from Sesame Street, these vampires are living beings who constantly bring us down with their drama and toxicity.
The first step in warding off these people is figuring out who they are.
“It can be a long, hard road trying to identify if someone is depleting your energy or not, and it may take time to accept that someone you care about is toxic,” psychic and host of “Witch Doctorate Podcast” Renee Watt says. “A common habit amongst vampires is that they will often glorify their lives, dump their emotional baggage on you, talk your ear off, then leave without asking how things are going on your end. Your intuition will also send signals to alert you of a vampire.”
But fret not: There are ways to combat this. Enter, psychic protection.
Psychic protection is extremely important for EVERYONE – especially those who practice magic, astrology, tarot, and mediumship. Basically, it’s using self-care as a defense against negativity and bad energy. The more you connect with yourself, the better you are able to identify what’s sucking out our energy.
“The physical body and mind are connected – it’s important to protect ourselves utilising the mind and our personal energy field to visualise a wall of projection from negativity,” Rachel True, a tarot reader and actress, said. “If we can change our mind, we can also change how we feel about ourselves. Becoming aware of your own energy … can allow [you] to pinpoint triggers and who or what steals or replenishes our energy. See how your energy vibrates around others.”
What Rachel said is key to warding off energy vampires. If we can look within and focus on our own energy, it’s harder for those trying to drag us down to feed off us. But all that’s easier said than done, right?
When not even garlic can keep these specific vampires away, we can create our own shield against others through evoking our own personal magic.
Cleansing our energy a few times a week, or even taking two minutes out of the day for ourselves to meditate and unwind, can help reduce psychic attacks and also help us implement self-care. But in case you’re not quite in touch with your magical side, we’ve compiled some pro-tips.
Our bodies and minds are like sponges. Other people’s energies can attach to our auras, which may make us feel (for lack of a better word) icky. In order to get our vibe back to normal, we must cleanse our energy. Selenite is a wonderful crystal to strip the body of bad vibes. Using the selenite crystal like a wand, pull the energy down and out to alleviate negative energy. Do not use selenite in the water; it’s a delicate crystal that will degrade when immersed in liquid. However, it will revive and refresh your energy.
Carrying around a healing crystal of choice is another great technique in general. Finding the crystal that resonates with your needs is important. Rose quartz is great to protect the heart, and amethyst is wonderful for healing the mind (both crystals can add extra oomph to bath-time cleansing and can be charged in water).
Aerinn Hodges offers more crystal care advice, saying, “When I need to set boundaries with a psychic vampire or other spiritual predators, I reach for stones of Saturn like onyx or brown jasper, and work them into protective charms with that in mind. No one is better than that old witch of a planet at setting limits, building walls, and making sure they last. Just be careful, because working with Saturn can bring out the stubborn grump in the best of us.”
Taking a bath filled with pink Himalayan salt (or any salt) will get rid of all the auric toxins. Be sure to cleanse your crown chakra (the chakra found at the top of the head) with the salt. The crown chakra is our connection to the spiritual world. When it’s open, we can connect deeper to ourselves and magic. Adding roses or lavender will help relax the body and mind as well. A dash of Florida Water will serve as extra protection and cleansing from vampiric energies.
Intuitive reiki healer and astrologer Kesaine Walker suggests “taking a bath filled with herbs like basil, rosemary, and sage for protection; white flowers, which take away negative energy and put back positive energy; and Florida water, which attracts positive energy and cleanses. Be sure to take a shower to clean your body before taking your bath. Make it a priority to do this at least once a week or whenever you’re feeling uncentered.”
Self-care coach, tarot reader, and author of “Neo Tarot: A Fresh Approach to Self-Care, Healing, and Empowerment” Jerico Mandybur makes drinking water a magical self-care ritual that can help keep energy vampires at bay.
“My favorite low-key magical self-care practice is something I don’t really have a name for, but it involves making a spell out of drinking water. Take a bottle of water and set an intention over it. Maybe it’s just a word, like ‘vitality’ or ‘self-love.’ You can even write it in marker on the bottom, imagining that just by focusing your energy and your intention, you’re magically transforming the molecular structure of the water into a nourishing, intention-filled drinkable spell,” Jerico said. “Then, through the day as you take a sip of your magical water, imagine that you’re ingesting all that positive energy. Feel it going down your throat and circulating through your system, giving you all the ‘vitality’ or ‘self-love’ or whatever! You can even imagine your water emitting a calming white light. You’d be amazed at how good it feels.”
Cut the Drama Out
Okay, this one’s more practical than magic: If others try to include you in their drama, or are always having issues, it’s time to decide if these relationships are the right fit. Signs it might be time to break up soon with your energy vampire include emotional manipulation and lying, constant jealousy, not being supportive, projecting issues onto others, competition, constant criticism, selfish behavior, destructive behavior, and a whole lotta drama 24/7. Any perspective on who causes anxiety and makes us feel bad needs to be put on “do not disturb” and sent away. Their energy can affect our overall vibe, which will cause us to suffer in the long run.
Bri Luna, owner and creative director of The Hoodwitch, suggests carrying “gemstones like Black Tourmaline, Obsidian, Hematite, and Smokey quartz” to expunge toxic vibes that bind us to others may weigh us down. Bruja and owner of Brooklyn Brujeria, Chiquita Brujita, says “burning cord cutting candles, wearing protective jewelry or charms, and creating personal rituals that make us feel strong are the best methods of self defense.”
Meditate and Visualise
Bruja, spiritual advisor, and mental health advocate Emilia Ortiz, suggests you “take a moment to center yourself, a few deep breaths and begin to visualise a white or ultraviolet light shining on you. Surrounding you in a bubble that cannot be penetrated by negative forces. Visualise the negative energy that may be there being transmuted by this light and feel it’s warmth. As you do this say out loud or in your head something along the lines of ‘As a sovereign being, I claim full ownership of my energy field. Any energy, being, or entity, that is draining me or my energy field, no longer has my permission to remain in my mind, body, or energy field. I honor you and wish you well, but you cannot stay, and you cannot return. Through the protection and power of the highest vibration, I command this to be so, and so it shall be.’”
Astrologer, psychic medium, intuitive counselor and host of “Ghost of a Podcast” Jessica Lanyadoo takes meditation and visualisation three steps further by suggesting we sit “still for a minute and feel whatever you’re feeling without trying to fix or analyse it” then “notice where you feel upsets or strong emotions in your body and breathe into them.” Through guiding our breath we can understand and “receive” our innermost feelings.” This simple act can be a part of any ritualistic practice, but spirituality doesn’t only happen in your Gothiest clothes, or near sparkly crystals. Integrate your spirituality into how you handle stress at school or fights with your parents. Build a stronger relationship to yourself as the foundation to your witchy ways, wherever they take you.
Through self-care and ridding vampiric energies through psychic protection, the heart is expanding and crushing on ourselves. Loving, healing, and helping ourselves will elevate our magic – as well as our everyday lives. After we have distanced ourselves from the suspected source of our drained energy, it’s important to remember the old adage and put it into practice: once bitten, twice shy.
