South African new vehicles sales remain depressed, but Toyota is feeling less pain than other car brands thanks to its Hilux bakkie.
In a market where buyers are under pressure
and carefully considering their purchase, one brand appears to be impervious to
any economic retraction.
Toyota’s share of the local new vehicle
market shows no sign of retracting. In October it sold the largest single-brand
share of all new vehicles traded in South Africa.
For Toyota, the most prominent aspect of is
local automotive business remains bakkies and SUVs. Hilux continues to be the
best-selling overall vehicle in South Africa and if you calculate the dominance
of Toyota in the light commercial vehicle segment, it is enormous.
From a total of 13366 light commercial
vehicle sold in South Africa last month, no less than 6640 were Toyotas.
The most popular overall vehicle remains the Hilux bakkie, at 4377 units. Its nearest rival in this segment was Ford’s Ranger, which trailed with 1806 sales.
VW leads the passenger market
The Japanese brand’s dominance fades
slightly within the passenger vehicle market, where VW still claims the number
one sales position.
Vivo continues to be South Africa’s favourite
passenger car and in October it sold 2937 units. The second most popular
passenger vehicle was Vivo’s slightly more sophisticated sibling, VW’s Polo,
with 2093 sales.
The country’s third most bought passenger
car was Toyota’s Quest, which 1313 new local owners in October.
Ranking South Africa’s best-selling overall
brands, Toyota leads the way, followed by VW. Ford classifies third (thanks to
its strong bakkie business), with Nissan in fourth position. Rounding out the
top five is Korean brand, Hyundai.
South Africa’s sixth favourite automotive
brand according to sales, is Renault, followed by Mercedes-Benz in seventh
place. Isuzu finished eight overall in local vehicles sales during October.
Suzuki was ninth and rounding out the top ten list of local vehicle brands, according to sales, was BMW.
Perhaps the most amazing statistic, is that if Hilux as a standalone brand, it would be the four biggest car company in South Africa, by sales.
